Temenos 08 a celebration of the music of John Tavener

The Ulster Orchestra will feature at the Sir John Tavener Temenos Music Festival in Louth Ireland this October and will be conducted for the first time by one of the world’s most respected conductors Tõnu Kaljuste, founder of the highly esteemed Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir.The festival is a major celebration of the music of Sir John Tavener,a leading figure in 20th century contemporary music and best know for his ‘Song for Athene’ performed at the funeral of Princess Diana in 1997, which will also be performed at the festival. Sir John Tavener’s choral and orchestral works reflect his deeply spiritual outlook and distinctive musical voice The weekend festival organized by Louth Contemporary Music Society (LCMS), runs from 24-26 October 2008 in venues across Louth, Ireland. The Festival will provide an exception opportunity to see major performers brought together for the first time in Ireland.

Highlights include the first performance by award winning group Anonymous 4, four women who sing with angelic harmonic voices and the world premiere of a new work by Sir John Tavener, ‘O My People’, which will be performed by one of the world’s best choirs, Polyphony and conducted by the exceptional musician Stephen Layton.One of the members of Anonymous 4 Jackie Horner, is originally from Monkstown, near Belfast but now lives in New York. ‘I am very excited to be coming back to Ireland to sing the works of Tavener at the festival, where some of my own friends and relatives will be able to hear me sing,’ she said.

The programme also includes The Protecting Veil with cellist Marta Sudraba, with Doreen Curran mezzo soprano from Derry who will sing Tavener’s Supernatural Songs, influenced by WB Yeats. The Ulster Orchestra performance will take place on Friday 24 October 2008 in St. Peter’s Church of Ireland, Drogheda.

Temenos 2008 is presented by Louth Contemporary Music Society in association with the Louth County Arts Office, Dundalk Arts Office, the Drogheda Arts Office and the Irish Times. Temenos 2008 is funded by The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon under its one off project scheme and financially supported by the Dundalk Arts Office, the Louth Arts Office, the Drogheda Arts Office and Fáilte Ireland.
