Silvestrov’s 5th Symphony in London April 2009

Silvestrov’s Symphony No.5 will be performed on 22 April 2009 in London by the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Southbank Centre conducted by Vladimir Jurowski. More details here
The mesmerising soundworld of Silvestrov’s Fifth Symphony is created through gently unfolding, meditative melodies and delicately textured musical tapestries. The work is often regarded as a coda to the history of the symphony after the works of the late Romantic composers such as Mahler. This concert was picked a one of the 2009 Classical Highlights music critic Edward Seckerson in The Independent. ‘I’m especially looking forward to [Jurowski’s] “Soviet” programme in April – an opportunity to experience the cult of Valentyn Silvestrov whose hallucinatory Fifth Symphony might once have been regarded as “quite a trip”.’
