As an introduction to the rich orthodox choral tradition that the Sirin Choir will perform in Dundalk, a Choral Workshop will take place focusing on orthodox chant with conductor/ composer and orthodox priest Ivan Moody in Dundalk. IVAN MOODY
Ivan Moody, Ph.D (b.1964), studied music and theology at the Universities of London, Joensuu and York. He studied composition with Brian Dennis, Sir John Tavener and William Brooks. His music has been performed and broadcast all over the world, and recorded on labels such as Hyperion, ECM, Telarc, Warner Classics and Sony.
His largest works to date are Passion and Resurrection (recorded on Hyperion CDA 66999) and the Akathistos Hymn (recorded on Gothic Records CD 49210). Recent significant works include Ravenna Sanctus, written for Chanticleer (2006: recorded on Warner Classics R2 146364), Stabat Mater (2008), for choir and string quartet, written for the Oslo International Festival of Church Music and Moons and Suns (2008), written for Ars Nova Copenhagen and the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet.
Recent commissions include Canti della Rosa for The King’s Singers, Canticum Canticorum IV for Seattle Pro Musica and the piano quintet Nocturne of Light for Paul Barnes and the Chiara Quartet. Current projects include works for the English Chamber Choir, the American ensemble In Mulieribus and the German group Singphoniker.
As a conductor he works regularly with a number of choirs and ensembles in both Europe and America, having paid special attention to Orthodox church music from Bulgaria, Finland and Serbia. As a musicologist he has written extensively on both early and contemporary music.
He is a priest of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, serving as rector of the Parish of St John the Russian in Estoril, Portugal, and is currently Chairman of the International Society for Orthodox Music.
WORKSHOP DETAILS
This workshop will introduce a number of strands of the rich and diverse traditions of Orthodox church music, including various kinds of monophonic chant (including Greek and Russian) and polyphonic choral music from such countries as Russia and Serbia. The music included will be presented as part of an open discussion of its history and context.

Participation at the Workshop will only be available for Sirin Choir ticket holders.
Tickets are available for Sirin Choir’s performance which will take place on 5 May 2011 at 8pm in St. Nicholas Church (Green Church) Church Street, Dundalk from www.centralticketbureau.com. Tickets cost €10.
