Cuban Guitars: The Music of Leo Brouwer | 8pm Sunday 18 April
Musicians: Andrey Lebedev, Guitar; Cecilia Bignall, Cello; Alec O’Leary, Guitar, Santiago Gomez Kodela, Guitar; Pavla Lušin, Guitar; Colm Connolly, Guitar.

Born in Havana in 1939, into a family of musicians, Leo Brouwer was nineteen when the Cuban Revolution succeeded, and as a young man he strove for some similar breakthrough in music. He studied the works of Luigi Nono and Iannis Xenakis; he also met Hans Werner Henze, when the latter visited Cuba in 1969. Soon, though, the double call of his instrument – the guitar – and of his native culture drew him in other directions. Read more.

A festival of specially filmed performances

We Sing for the Future presents composers from Ireland and other parts of the world, across a range of traditions and perspectives, united only by their music’s immediacy and urgency. These are voices we need to hear, and listen to, especially at such times. Performances are in the hands of musicians who can bring the music to vivid life, despite the circumstances, despite everything. The festival for new music shares luminous, inventive work of the highest level in its online offering for 2021
